Installation of José Luis Ponce de León as as Bishop of the Diocese of the Kingdom of Swaziland

On 27th January 2014 (anniversary of the 100 years of the presence of the Catholic missionaries in the then protectorate of Swaziland) the "installation" of Jose Luis Ponce de Leon as Bishop of the Diocese of the Kingdom of Swaziland took place (1,100,000 people). He will now be in charge of the diocese of Ingwavuma (KZN in SA where he had been pronounced bishop back in 2009).

The installation coincided with the annual conference of bishops (29 dioceses from countries dependent on the Vatican representative based in Pretoria including SA, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland). It is the first to be held in the Swazi kingdom and obviously it was in support of the future management of Bishop Ponce de Leon to be the only bishop in that country.

The ceremony of the “installation " was emotional , warm , poignant , the religious ceremony combined greetings to all the bishops , priests, nuns ,  special guests and administrators of parishes with local songs ( chorus of Salesians consisting almost 100 women) for a total of four hours. There is no doubt that Bishop Ponce de Leon is the perfect person for that country where the Catholic population reaches 5% of the total, has 50 schools, a hospital (in which the minister of health and the minister of justice are attended to) 20 clinics and emergency clinics, the cathedral in Manzini, 15 parishes, 200 religious communities with their local leaders. The country is 30 % infected with HIV, while Bishop Ponce de Leon is the program coordinator of the Holy See to counteract HIV across the region that is dependent on the representative from the Vatican.

The ceremony was attended by more than 5,000 people (in the Don Bosco Youth Centre) apart from the believers, students, and ordinary people, the Prime Minister attended, 9 cabinet ministers and a representative of the king. At that same level of representation was the undersigned, who also accompanied the Bishop in other protocol activities the previous two days before the ceremony of installation.
