On 16 October, the Embassy of Argentina, inaugurated the audiovisual exhibition "Afro Argentina" by Argentine photographer Gabriela Messina, at the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg. The Director of the Market Photo Workshop, Lekgeto Makola opened the ceremony presenting the history of the school. He was followed by Ambassador Alberto D'Alotto, who welcomed Gabriela to South Africa, highlighted the importance of the partnership with the Market Photo Workshop and gave a historical context to the exhibition.
The exhibition is composed of six portraits in lenticular format, four videos and plottings on the walls. Its objective is to question the notion of Argentina as a "white and European" Nation, as well as to interact with local audiences and the context of racial issues in South Africa.
Gabriela presented her trajectory, in a dialogue with Salym Fayad, Colombian photojournalist and curator that lives in Johannesburg. Gabriela shared with the audience the reasons behind her motivation to study the history of Afro descendents in Argentina.
During her stay in South Africa, Gabriela also gave masterclasses to students at Open Window and Market Photo Workshop.
The exhibition will be open until 30th November at the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg
