Fourth Binational Comission Meeting

Thursday 1st of August 2013

The day of the date took place in Buenos Aires the Fourth Session of the Argentina-South Africa Binational Commission, co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Argentina, Hector Timerman, and the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa Maite Nkoana-Mashabane. The Binational Commission was established in 2005.

Among other issues discussed, the Ministers expressed their strong commitment to maintain close ties in the multilateral economic agenda. In this regard, they agreed that this collaboration, which is articulated in the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Group of 20 (G20), and in many other forums, should continue to deepen.

Both countries raised, in turn, their intention to work together with other developing countries, in order to address the weaknesses of Bilateral Investment Agreements of first generation, in the light of their own experiences and evaluation of costs, benefits and consistent with their domestic laws.

Also, Argentina and South Africa concluded and signed a Bilateral Agreement of Fiscal Information Exchange and one on Mutual Assistance in customs matters.

Furthermore, the Ministers shared the concern about the negative impact of the activities of vulture funds in the schemes of debt restructuring and development strategies, particularly in Africa and Latin America.
