September´s Newsletter of the Secretariat of Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic

During the month of September, the Malvinas Question was once again at the heart of the domestic and international political agenda.

President Alberto Fernández and Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero headed the delegation that, during the month of September, participated in the opening of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly. At that forum, the Argentine President once again reaffirmed Argentina's legitimate and imprescriptible sovereignty rights over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas, which are part of Argentina's national territory and have been illegally occupied by the United Kingdom for almost 190 years.

As has been happening since the origins of the United Nations Organization, the “Question of the Malvinas Islands” was once again present at the UN at a time when, in the context of the 40th anniversary of the South Atlantic conflict, the national government officially declared a year of commemoration to the fallen in the South Atlantic conflict, to their families and veterans, as well as a set of actions to disseminate and raise awareness on the Argentine sovereign rights over our southern archipelagos.

On the occasion of the launching of the Summer Antarctic Campaign, I went to the Marambio Base in the Argentine Antarctic Sector. With the logistic support of the Joint Antarctic Command of the Ministry of Defense, and together with a delegation of scientists from the Argentine Antarctic Institute, the National Director of the Antarctic and officials of the Secretariat, we toured the different facilities of the Base and learned about the valuable work carried out by men and women in extremely hostile weather conditions. I consider it essential to revalidate our commitment to this Antarctic scientific policy, since it not only enhances our foreign policy and our leading role within the Antarctic Treaty System, but also means a strategic contribution to sustain our legitimate sovereignty rights over that national territory.
